Happy Birthday Nelson Mandela :)
Mandela was born in the South African village of Mvezo in what is now Transkei.
Mandela's birth name was Rolihlahla, which can be interpreted as meaning troublemaker.
He was renamed by an African teacher when he was seven.
When his father died, Mandela became a ward of the Thembu regent.
(His father was an adivsor to the king of the Thembu people.)
In 1943, He received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of South Africa & Fort Hare College and began the study of law at the Univesity of the Witwatersrand.
During this time he met members of the African National Congress--Joining in 1944.
Mandela organized ANC's youth league and led non-violent protests against Apartheid Legislation in South Africa.
After receiving his law degree in 1951, He (and his friend Oliver Tambo) opened South Africa's first black law practice.
Shortly after, Mandela & 8,500 other Blacks were arrested under the Suppression of Communism Act.
(The way the act was written was so broad, any one bringing any change to the nation was considered Communist. Don't let that C-word scare you as they taught in school!)
Mandela was banned & restricted to Johannesburg.
In 1960, the Sharpeville Massacre, in which 69 unarmed Black protestors were slain, and over 400 were wounded by police.
(South African police opened fire on the crowd of peaceful protestors..smh)
Mandela agreed to coordinate an ANC paramiliatary group to carry out sabotage against government targets.
Fearing re-arrest (after being acquitted of treason charges), Mandela went underground.
He visited England, Algeria, and Ethiopia seeking support of his ANC guerrilla campaign.
When he returned to South Africa in 1962, he was convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the government (Treason again.) And he was sentenced to life in prison.
Mandela & other ANC leaders were held under harsh conditions on Robben Island.
Prisoner #466/64, Mandela worked in a stone quarry and gathered seaweed that the government sold as fertilizer.
While imprisoned his mother passed of an heart attack & his son was killed in a car crash :(
In 1982, he was moved from Robben Island to Pollsmoor Prison, conditions were better there.
He was released in 1990.
In 1993, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
(For everything from his efforts in helping end the apartheid laws to progressing the South African government toward democratic rule.
In 1994, he was elected president of South Africa :D
-Mandela we love you & the ANC...we will be eternally grateful & we NEED to try to show our appreciation in the best way we can :) From Africa to all of the world, we salute you.
